Diet related morpho-functional changes in domestic/wild animals aimed at the management of natural ecosystems


The research is aimed at evaluating anatomical parameters (at a macroscopic, microscopic and molecular level) and physiological parameters (wellbeing indices, behavioral modules) in relation to different diets to which the animals are subjected, which may be linked to seasonality or other factors (type of pasture; food supplementation), in addition to climate changes. The investigations are divided into two levels: basic research and applied research for the purposes of managing natural ecosystems (including those partly anthropized on which activities related to livestock farming are based). Morphometric analyzes of shape and size of anatomical structures are conducted both through classical biometry and geometric morphometry. The molecules involved in food intake are studied with regards to their expression (RT-PCR), in situ localization (immunohistochemistry), and their blood concentration (RIA, ELISA). The glyco-histochemical profiles of the organs are analyzed in combination with the presence of oxidation markers, also in order to highlight the endogenous defense and antioxidant capacity. Qualitative/quantitative data relating to production (milk, cheese, meat, wool) and correlated to environmental and morpho-functional parameters are collected, in order to support the environmental, economic and social sustainability of mountain territories. Scientific dissemination and citizen science activities are associated with the research.
