Systematic botany, floristic research and conservation of vascular plants

Conservation of plant biodiversity is a central theme and a crucial global challenge. To evaluate and describe the conservation status of the plant heritage of a given territory it is essential to know, in the first instance, what are the species that grow there and their distribution. These informations are derived from the floristic research and checklists and from taxonomic and systematic studies, essential tools for the conservation and protection of biodiversity. Our research concerns taxonomic and systematic studies on vascular plants in Italy and Mediterranean area, with a special focus on Italian endemics. Specific studies concerning some genera as Adonis, Centaurea, Corydalis, Galium, Gagea, Genista, Leontodon, Mcneillia, Minuartia, Onobrychis, Pinguicula, Knautia, Ranunculus and Thymus are carried out. We coordinate the updating of the checklists of the vascular flora native and alien to Italy. These updates inventories serve as a taxonomic and nomenclatural platform for further research in floristic, taxonomic, geobotanical or environmental studies. Furthermore, we proposed an online database, continuously updated, of Italian vascular flora (PORTAL TO THE FLORA OF ITALY). We collaborate on two international projects that aim to survey and map the vascular plants of Europe and the Mediterranean region (Euro+Med project and Atlas Florae Europaeae). We collaborate to the new Red List of the Italian vascular Flora, providing a nomenclatural support and throught the assessment of plants taxa of conservation interest. We coordinate the V Report ex art. 17 of Habitat Directive for vascular plants.
