Nutrition surveillance: Survey on Dietary habits and nutrition education
In recent years, due to cultural and social changes, a shift toward less healthy nutritional practices has been shown with a consequence decrease in Mediterranean Diet (MD) adherence and increase in obesity and diet-related non communicable disease risk. In this context, research activities are focused on the identification of factors influencing the adoption of healthy dietary behaviors by surveys investigating on food habits and MD adherence in different socio-economic groups. In order to sustain the shift toward more sustainable dietary habits, nutritional educational activities based on MD and good nutritional and behavioral practices are design and development. They aim to increase awareness on benefits of MD both for health status and environmental sustainability; improve knowledge regarding food and nutrients content; increase MD adherence also by improving food and cooking skills; guide people on adequate food choice depending on the quality and health-related beneficial and sustainable properties. In addition, canteen menu are studied and developed with a focus on promoting health and sustainability, aiming to contribute to students' nutritional education. This research activity is in line with the objectives of the PRIMA Tool4MEDLife project of which the research group is coordinator and with projects in collaboration with local institutions and associations.
